Does Formal Education Matter in Tech?

I often find myself talking about the future of education. Many of my general conversations, especially those regarding my kids, go there. Depending on who is on the other end, I usually resort to my experience with the working world today.

To me, many college graduates are “going through the motions,” obtaining their degree, and then entering into an industry they have no knowledge or experience in.

Why does this happen?

It’s because it’s all about who you know.

They’ll start out on the path they chose, but then external forces heighten. They have to get their own place, pay off their student loans, and think about becoming a real-life adult.

Making matters worse, they see friends on social media that are “seemingly” successful working other jobs in potentially more lucrative verticals.

The panic sets in and the lost youngster leverages a contact to land a job they know nothing about.

This scenario repeats across the country.

My solution: Skip college. Student loans have become the crutch of wealth development for America’s young workforce. How can you build wealth when college is garnishing your income? It’s frustrating.

The smartest and most forward-thinking individuals consider their futures prior to college. IF you hone in on marketable skills, and do what is necessary to create value with them before you have to formalize it, the passion becomes far more impressive than a degree.

To prove my point, albeit a very finite example of “tech or programming,” I’ve embedded the results of a recent survey regarding salaries based on level of education in the country.

So, next time we argue about the future of higher learning, hear me out. College doesn’t always have to be the route to take.
