A few months ago, one of my closest friends decided to take the treacherous journey up the east coast on the Appalachian Trail. For those unfamiliar, the trail spans from Georgia to Maine and takes months to hike.
Needless to say, a lot of us felt that our firend wasn’t capable of such an exhasuting adventure. We felt that he wasn’t in good enough shape and didn’t have the experience living amongst the wild.
Alongside all of our concerns, we genuinely felt most nervous about not being able to maintain communication with him throughout the hike and his lack of the necessary protective equipment. Will he bring enough water? Enough food? Flashlights? Tools? There are so many items to consider beforehand.
One thing I discovered before he departed on his trip was the SPOT Satellite GPS messenger. This device allows you to always be available to the world due to the fact that it’s connected to satellites. You can check-in so your friends know where you are and send status updates to them whenever you’d like. It’s like a personal tracking system.
This device allowed us to have some peace of mind due to the fact that there was an emergency button. If he were to get lost, get sick, or even run into some sort of danger, a simple press of a button calls for help and lets the authorities know exactly where he is.
Protective measures like these allowed my friend to make it back home safely after a few months. While he didn’t complete the entire trail, he survived out in the wild for several weeks and had an incredible experience.
