There may not be a more provocative sentence an alpha male can say.
Not watching sports reveals so much about a male in just one sentence.
- I have more important things to do with my time.
- I prefer to read.
- Sports aren’t art. I prefer creative entertainment.
- My significant other doesn’t like to watch sports so I do it to spend time with her.
- I can always check the scores later.
- There are too many amazing television programs competing for my TV time these days.
Each of these points can be elaborated further at will.
The takeaway: The time it takes to take in sporting events in their entirety is becoming increasingly difficult. As the millenial generation gets older and start their own families, time becomes more precious. I’m not that convinced the younger generation can remove themselves away from their digital norms to be as excited about televised sporting events. Virtual reality may be the answer (the ability to wear a headset and sit courtside, for example), but that still seems like a toss-up at this point.
