You can bat 1000 in baseball and still be far from perfect. You could be lunging too much, moving your head, or locking your arms even the tiniest of amounts. Just because you are getting hits all the time, doesn’t mean you have a perfect swing.
You could be a musician with the #1 bestselling and award winning album. The songs could be loved and the writing could have touched many lives. But that doesn’t mean you didn’t miss out on adding that amazing crescendo before the chorus of that one song. That would have made it even better. Epic even!
If you’re the CEO of the most successful and hottest company of the year, it doesn’t mean you didn’t make any mistakes along the way. You are expected to learn from your experiences and evolve from them. Board Members could perceive you as an ideal leader for the business, but you’ll undoubtedly notice vulnerabilities and make adjustments to improve the operation over time.
The takeaway is clear. Nothing is ever absolutely perfect.
You can always do every single thing better. Whether it’s the way you prepare for it, the time you take doing it, or how you store the learnings after the fact.
